Shop and Dine
While owners of Saratoga property have always fiercely guarded the Village area from becoming too trendy and crowded, this doesn’t mean that the downtown district is as sleepy as it sometimes looks. There’s a definite air of vitality in the Village these days, brought about by the resurgence of gourmet restaurants along Big Basin Way, the city’s restaurant row.
Decades before the dot-com boom, Saratoga had already established a reputation in the Bay Area for the excellence of its cuisine; a reputation that’s being brushed up and polished today by such well-known establishments as Restaurant Sent Soví, the completely remodeled Plumed Horse, La Fondue, La Mere Michelle and Restaurant Gervais.
The shopping scene is getting reenergized as well, with the influx of new businesses like trendy jewelers Deja and Co., boutiques like Kitsch Couture, and antique and furniture stores like Indo Teak & Gifts and Heatherfields by Design Options.
For more shopping and dining options, residents head to other shopping centers in the city, one of which is the Argonaut Shopping Center. This is where you’ll find the chain stores not allowed in the Village area such as branches of Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Longs, and Safeway. With only a little over one percent of Saratoga property zoned for commercial use, the community today is interested in the redevelopment plans for the Quito Village Shopping Center on Cox Avenue, which was purchased in mid-2007.
