Scattered across the slopes and hilltops of the Santa Cruz Mountains surrounding Saratoga are vineyards and wineries that continue the venerable tradition of viticulture and winemaking introduced by the California Missions generations ago. Indeed, Saratoga is where you’ll find the Paul Masson Mountain Winery – which is now simply the Mountain Winery – one of the first to popularize California sparkling wine in the late 19th century. Wines made from the grapes grown in the region fall under the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA (American Viticultural Area) appellation.
The Paul Masson Mountain Winery had discontinued winemaking in the 1950s and has only recently started producing again under new ownership. Even when the winery was no longer producing, however, it was still frequented by visitors from near and far for its Music in the Vineyards Concert series, which continues to this day.
Other notable wineries within minutes of Saratoga, California homes for sale are the Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards, the Savannah-Channelle Vineyards (established in 1892), and the Cinnabar Vineyards & Winery (which also has a tasting room in downtown Saratoga).
The Cooper-Garrod Vineyards is family-owned and operated; the property, in fact, has remained in the family for over a century. They produce award-winning chardonnay, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon and there’s also an equestrian center, Garrod Farms Riding Stables, within the estate.
