History of Saratoga
Saratoga, CA homes for sale are located in a community with a long and rich history. The area we now know as Saratoga was once inhabited by Native Americans before becoming part of the 13,000-acre Rancho Quito, a land grant given to José Noriega by Mexico in the 1840s. The area wasn’t settled until 1848, however, after William Campbell had built a lumber mill and a settlement started growing near it.
Saratoga has been known by many names throughout the course of its existence. After the mill was established, it was dubbed Campbell’s Gap. When Martin McCarty built a road and put up a tollgate, it was then known as Tollgate. At the same time, since McCarty had also laid out a town, it was also known as McCartysville.
The community grew and mineral springs were discovered soon after not far from the mill. Another discovery was that the water in the springs had a chemical content almost identical to that of the famed Congress Springs in the spa city of Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1865, The townspeople decided Saratoga sounded better than McCartysville and the rest, as they say, is history.
A resort hotel was built near the springs and by the late 19th century, Saratoga had become the Victorian version of a vacation destination while at the same time being an industrial and agricultural town as well. It wasn’t after World War II, however, that Saratoga, CA homes for sale began to have a market. In danger of being annexed by San Jose, Saratoga incorporated in 1956 and hasn’t looked back since.
